The Lord upholds me

It is in the darkest and most vulnerable moments that I can feel God is distant and removed from me. It is as if wounds and challenges create a separation between us – at least in my emotions. Painful events can even make us feel as though we are being punished or rejected by God. What if I could see His unchanging tenderness and concern for me? What if it is through those very moments that He wishes to unite me to Himself more?

David was able to pierce beyond his difficult circumstances and, by faith, see the faithful closeness of the Lord.

But you, Lord, are a shield about me,
my glory, who lift up my head.
I cry aloud to the Lord.
He answers from his holy mountain.

Psalm 3:3

He was able to see that the Lord was interested in lifting his head, in listening to him and in protecting him, which He did.

Lord of compassion, who humbled Yourself to our fallen nature to redeem it and to be one with me, help me to believe that you never abandon me. Help me to lie down in rest in Your arms and from there, to live courageously.

I lie down to rest and I sleep.
I wake, for the Lord upholds me.
I will not fear even thousands of people
who are ranged on every side against me.

Psalm 3:7
